Waking up in an alley on the edge of the Fey Steps neighborhood of Granz City, Zechs was a blank slate. He was sixteen, with no sense of identity or self. All he knew was that there was something profound missing. Forever searching for his past and memories, Zechs worked many odd jobs until he met the man who would become a father-like figure in his life: Argo. Argo, a Human, was the head of a fairly new bounty hunter’s guild in the city called The Shuffle Guild. The Shuffle Guild had been born out of the aftermath of the Second War of the Fey Kings. Their meeting, Zechs would later find out, was anything but chance.

Taking Zechs under his wing, much as he did with the other members of the guild, Argo showed him the ropes of being a tracker and bounty hunter. Honing his skills along with his connection to animals, wildlife, and urban centers, Zechs excelled and thrived with the guild. While it was mostly in jest, Zechs had unintentionally become the “Old Man’s Favorite”. His siblings, as he called the other members of the guild, cared for him but also treated him as any older sibling would treat a younger sibling. When a job came up that would be a good starting point for his journey, he took it, and things would never be the same.

Early on, Zechs was thrust into a leadership role that he didn’t want and didn’t think he was ready for. To help a bit with this new burden and as a small reminder of home, the Tabaxi was sent a bloodhawk as an animal companion, which he named Duo. The two were instantly inseparable, and Zechs slowly but surely settled into the party and their hijinks. Throughout his early journey with the party, revelations gave him hope that he would eventually find what he was seeking: his past. Through Kyver, he found that there was a Tabaxi city called Nymora that had a familiar ring to it that he couldn’t place. He received a letter from Argo that spoke of the Feywild and a deal with King Oberon that was confirmed to be true by the Archfey himself.

After the party’s trek to find a temple of a long-lost religion and a second traumatic encounter with the Constable, Zechs would finally see Nymora on his home plane of Sloane. He reunited with his parents, Rinde and Seti, all the while continuing to experience glimpses of his past thanks to his encounter with Oberon. More light would be shed on his past in rapid succession: a guttural growl in the back of his mind that led to a shard of a lesser deity within him, years spent in the Feywild for his own safety, and imagery of his own sacrifice. Needless to say, this took a toll on Zechs and his outlook on life.

Despite all of this, a fair bit of good has come from his journey so far. He has helped to liberate several cities from the clutches of fanatics and cults. While some of them are disturbing, Zechs has regained his memories and the family that he once hoped for and sought out. Duo has excelled far beyond what he thought possible with his development of speech, making the Tabaxi a de facto father figure. No matter the difficulty of the position he has held, Zechs’s determination and belief in himself and his party have seen him through to the other side.

Bestial Bond

Forged from infancy, Zechs’s bond with Duo transcends the physical. The Tabaxi and his Blood Hawk companion share a telepathic link, allowing Duo to send images, warnings, or spoken thoughts across vast distances. Whether scouting ahead or navigating danger, Duo becomes Zechs’s eyes in the sky, and Zechs becomes Duo’s anchor, an unbreakable connection born of trust, devotion, and shared purpose.
